The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) is pleased to present a new series of snow-white works by LA artist Kori Newkirk for its annual holiday exhibition. Newkirk, a current Artist-in-Residence at The Fabric Workshop and Museum, brings unusual materials such as pomade and fake snow to a body of work inspired by his identity and upbringing.
An Opening Reception and Holiday Party, free and open to the public, will take place on Friday, December 5, 2003 from 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Kori Newkirk was born in New York in 1970. He received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993 and his MFA from the University of California at Irvine in 1997. Newkirk has had solo exhibitions at The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2003); Galleria Francesca Kaufman, Milan, Italy (2003, 2001); Finesilver Gallery, Texas (2002); James Van Damme Gallery, Brussels, Belgium (2002); and at the Rosamund Felsen Gallery, Santa Monica (2001, 1999). He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including Majestic Sprawl, Pasadena Museum of Californian Art (2002); Maximum Art, International Curatorial Space, New York (2002); Short Stories, The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2002); One Planet Under a Groove, The Bronx Museum, New York (2000); Snapshot, The Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2001); Freestyle, The Studio Museum in Harlem (2001); and Painting 2001, at the Victoria Miro Gallery, London, 2001.
The Fabric Workshop and Museum is the only contemporary art museum in the United States devoted to creating new work in fabric and other materials in collaboration with emerging and established artists from around the world. Founded in 1977, The Fabric Workshop and Museum has developed from an ambitious experiment to a renowned institution with a widely recognized residency program, an extensive collection of work by resident artists, in-house and touring exhibitions, and comprehensive educational programming that includes lectures, tours, in-school presentations, and student apprenticeships. All FWM exhibitions and programs are free and open to the public. Hours: Mon. – Fri. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat., noon to 4 p.m.
